Making the First Edition

We're excited to say that after two years of development and a great deal of support from our customers on First Edition, we're nearly ready to start shipping our first bottles and vials of the UNITE collection.

Day 1 of production started properly with a Full English on an early train up from London to Lincolnshire in the beautiful British countryside.

The production requires a lot of care and attention to detail, and as you'll see in the videos in this post (more on our Instagram), it's all very 'hands on'.

Before getting to this point we've had to produce the premium cologne concentrate, which takes place in the heart of the best cologne production in the world: Grasse France. They sent over the concentrate several months ago

This is necessary in advance as there are several stages between concentrate and cologne.  First the concentrate needs to be blended with organic alcohol to take it to the 'nearly finished' product.

As a side note: the amount of alcohol you blend with the cologne defines what kind of fragrance you produce. In reality, cologne is probably not the perfect name for the UNITE collection - more properly it's an Eau De Toilette. But colloquially men's fragrances as a group are known as colognes. We'll discuss this in a future blog post I think!

Next, it's tested for stability for several months, undergoing all sorts of freezing, exposure to light and other tests.

Finally it's matured before it can be bottled. Like fine wine, cologne needs time for the scents and flavours to open up.

After this process is finished, the cologne is ready and the bottle filling, labelling and packaging takes place. As you can see by Nigel's eagle eyes above, an eye for detail is vital. Each bottle is different so each label needs to be checked to see if it appears straight on the bottle.

We'll talk more about the process of making cologne when the dust has settled in the coming weeks, it's fascinating stuff. But for we're very proud to say that the production is now nearly complete. We should be shipping our first bottles and vials in early September, so if you're in the UK you can expect your UNITE packages to start arriving very soon.

For our customers abroad, because perfume has to be shipped (for safety reasons you can't put it in an aeroplane) it will be a few weeks into September before you'll be getting your parcel. But we're still hoping to have something in your hands by the end of the month.

All that's left now is choosing which charity give 10% of this years UNITE profits. We'll be in touch if you're a First Edition backer to give you some options on that. Until then, we're back to work on the final stages of the UNITE First Edition run...
